Tangled Up in Tunes, an educational initiative of the Bob Dylan Center and a component of Tulsa Public Schools’ expanded learning programming, invites middle and high school students to explore the power of music in a creative, hands-on environment. With generous support from several grant-writing organizations, local recording artists from the Tulsa music scene lead students through lessons in electric and acoustic guitar, keyboard, harmonica, and percussion. Students not only learn to play instruments—they form bands, collaborate with peers, and perform live music together, gaining confidence and a sense of belonging along the way.

In addition to performance, the program emphasizes songwriting and musical storytelling. Students are encouraged to tap into their own experiences and express themselves through original lyrics and melodies, guided by mentors who help bring their ideas to life. These experiences give students more than just technical skills—they foster teamwork, self-expression, and a lasting appreciation for music as both an art form and a means of connection.
