As a member of the legendary gospel, soul and R&B singing group The Staple Singers and throughout her extraordinary solo career, Mavis Staples’ impact on music and culture is impossible to overstate. She is an inductee of both the Blues and Rock & Roll Halls of Fame, a multiple Grammy Award-winner, a chart-topping soul/gospel/R&B pioneer, a National Arts Awards Lifetime Achievement recipient and a Kennedy Center honoree. Hailed by NPR as “one of America’s defining voices of freedom and peace,” Mavis has long been regarded as a leading voice of the civil rights movement. Throughout her illustrious career, Staples has collaborated with numerous artists across the musical spectrum, including Prince, Bonnie Raitt, Van Morrison, Arcade Fire, Jeff Tweedy and many more. She recorded a duet with Bob Dylan on the latter’s “Gonna Change My Way Of Thinking,” and toured the U.S. with him in 2016.
