Going Electric: Bob Dylan '65 - Member Exhibit Opening

Members are invited to celebrate the opening of “Going Electric: Bob Dylan ’65” with an advanced viewing at the Bob Dylan Center and a film screening and discussion at Circle Cinema on Wednesday, July 23.

The evening will begin at the Bob Dylan Center with a self-guided first look at “Going Electric: Bob Dylan ’65” from 5-7 p.m. The exhibition offers an immersive, multimedia exploration of one of the most transformative years in Dylan’s career and the cultural upheaval that followed.

The celebration continues at Circle Cinema with an exclusive screening at 8 p.m. of a film—assembled just for this members-only evening and showcased in a different format as part of the exhibition—featuring rare footage of Dylan’s controversial July 25, 1965 performance at the Newport Folk Festival, when his switch from acoustic to electric instrumentation shocked folk-music purists. These phenomenal concert scenes are augmented with never-before-seen interview footage with key attendees including Joan Baez, Joe Boyd, John Cohen, Al Kooper, Bruce Langhorne, Maria Muldaur and Pete Seeger. Their candid recollections reveal the truths behind the myths of that cataclysmic day.

Exhibition curator Mark Davidson will introduce the film and lead a post-screening audience Q&A along with American Song Archives Video Producer Halle Frieden, who assembled the footage for this special event and the exhibition.

“Going Electric: Bob Dylan ’65” is generously supported by Presenting Sponsors Bob and Debbie Russell.
